The blaring of an alarm clock woke Archer and he sat up almost immediately, jumping out of bed and immediately walking over to the clock and turning it off. He was scheduled to go down to the outskirts of Anchorage to a breeder to pick up a couple of pups he had claimed. While excited, he was somewhat apprehensive, as he was familiar with the challenges of raising a tokota, this would be the first time he would attempt raising two at once. The pups were siblings from the same litter, a black male and a brown female. He was impatient to head out, but he knew that he would have to wait for the plane to come in and land in town. Archer paced around his house, knowing that it would only take forty five minutes to walk to the airport, and after a few dozen glances at his watch, it was time for him to leave. He swung the front door shut and set off down his driveway at a brisk walk, noting the cool breeze on his face as he walked down the hill. Archer walked quickly over the thin dirt road into town, kicking small pebbles and stones in front of him in an attempt to slow himself down so he wouldn’t have to wait long for the plane at the airport. He passed a few people on his way to the edge of town, waving hello and pausing to exchange tidbits of information, mostly learning of where the fish and bears were and exchanging inquiries about their respective lines of work. Despite the kind and courteous conversation, all of his neighbours could see that he was eager to go, and they all knew that he was heading down the coast in order to get a couple of new tokota puppies. They wished him well and sent him on his way, and Archer was able to make his way through the center of town and to the airport without incident. He walked into the terminal and greeted the young man behind the counter, stating that he was here for a flight to Anchorage. The man smiled and gestured for Archer to take a seat in the waiting area by a bing window that looked out over the tarmac. He sat down in one of the open seats and fiddled with his hands, feet, and tail as he anxiously waited for the airplane to come in and pick him up. Archer waited ten minutes before he heard the drone of an engine, and he sprang up from his seat to peer out the large window that looked out over the tarmac. A plane was lining up with the runway to land, bouncing slightly in the wind as it descended through the air and landed on the runway with a screech of tires. The plane taxied up to the hangar and cut it’s engines, and Archer turned to look at the man behind the desk. “Oh don’t worry, they just have to fuel up. I know you’re eager to head out Archer.” He said with a grin. “Don’t worry, you’ll be up in the air within thirty minutes.” He said, handing him a pair of earphones. The pilot walked up to the building and poked his head in, taking off his sunglasses and squinted in the dim light. “Archer?” He asked, glancing between Archer and the man behind the desk. “Yes sir.” Archer said, walking up to the pilot and offering a hand, which the pilot shook. He glanced down at the headset in Archer’s head before looking up at him. “All set?” He asked, and Archer nodded. “Let’s head out then.” The pilot said, turning and walking back out onto the tarmac. Archer followed, and climbed into the plane after the pilot. He strapped himself into the seat, watching carefully how the pilot buckled himself in and mimicked his actions. The pilot started his checks, pressing seemingly random switches and turning knobs before starting up the engine with a sputter and then throaty rumble as the engine caught and started. Archer slipped the headphones over his ears, grateful for any noise reduction. The pilot taxied the plane onto the runway, and they were off on a southern course to Anchorage. They had a relatively quick and smooth flight over, and landed at the airport uneventfully. Archer caught a taxi to the breeder’s on the other side of town, and after fifteen minutes of anxious waiting in the cab, he was deposited at the breeder’s door. Tail flicking with anticipation, Archer walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell. A friendly woman greeted the door with a “Hello, you must be Archer! Mocha and Jackdaw have been waiting for you, and they’re all ready to set out.” She said, gesturing for him to come into the house. Archer stepped inside, and his ears were immediately assaulted with a chorus of barks, yips, and growls. Amazingly, they were all coming from a single black tokota puppy, who seemed to be trying to convince the other, a brown, to play. As the two humanoids entered the room, both pups looked up and began to wag their tails. “This is Jackdaw, and this is Mocha, correct?” Archer asked, indicating the small black tokota and then the brown, and the young woman nodded. “Yep, Jackdaw seems to be pretty vocal, though he will probably quiet down as he grows. Mocha is generally pretty playful, though she seems to be a little tired today.” She said, bending towards the tokotas and giving Mocha a scratch. “If you’re all set, I can have them harnessed up and ready to go in a few minutes.” She said, and Archer nodded. The young woman left the room, leaving Archer alone with the two tokota pups. While still young, they were easily the size of a large dog and were incredibly active, bouncing around and trying to get Archer to play with them. “Hello there.” Archer said, kneeling beside Jackdaw. He was immediately attacked with a flurry of licks while Mocha crept around his back. The small brown pup pounced on his tail and clamped her jaws around the furry appendage. Archer yelped, clamping a hand over his mouth as soon as the sound escaped his mouth and turned towards the brown pup. She quickly released his tail at the sound of his yelp, though it brought the breeder running. “Is everything okay?” She asked, almost dropping the red and blue harnesses and leashes in her hands. “I think Mocha tried to take a chunk out of my tail, but other than that, everything is fine.” Archer said with a pained grin. “Do you need any help with those?” He asked, and the young woman smiled, handling him the blue set of harness and leash. Archer took them from her and tried to get Jackdaw’s attention. The pup trotted over to him, trying to lick his face again. While Archer tried to distract him, he managed to fit the harness around his shoulders and chest, tightening the straps and clipping a leash to the harness. It took a few minutes to get the harness around the wiggling tokota puppy, but Archer eventually succeeded. The breeder wished him well and handed him the red leash, and Archer was dragged out the door by two tokota puppies eager to find out what the taxi cab driver was shouting about. Needless to say, he wasn’t exactly pleased by the two new large additions to his car, but thankfully both pups were well behaved, with each sitting on the window seat and sticking their heads out the car window, with Archer smushed in the center seat between them. The pups were well behaved in the car, though as they left the cab and approached the airport they became a little uneasy with the loud noises. The pilot was still there waiting for them, and after a minute of explaining that the tokota pups weren’t fond of the loud noises, he was able to produce a couple extra headsets that were able to fit over the ears of the pups. Initially they whined and pawed at them, but as they neared and got into the aircraft, the pups became more complacent with the headsets, perhaps realizing that the loud noises weren’t quite so loud and scary. The plane ride home was quick and relatively easy for the pups once they got used to the motion of the plane, and even tried a few times to climb into the front seats of the small aircraft. The pilot wasn’t amused, though he didn’t mind them licking his face and hand every now and then. Archer tried his best to watch them and keep them out of trouble until they landed back in his town. Archer thanked and paid the pilot before hopping out of the plane with the two pups. They immediately tried to drag him in two different directions, with Mocha running towards the left and Jackdaw running towards the right. The forty five minute walk home turned into a hour and fifteen minute walk when Mocha and Jackdaw decided to inspect just about every bush, shrub, tree, and pebble on the side of the road as Archer tried to get them to walk in a relatively straight line. By the time Archer had managed to get the pups up the driveway and into his house, he was exhausted. One puppy was certainly a handful, but he was starting to doubt whether or not he would be able to handle both siblings at once. Archer’s thoughts were almost immediately interrupted by a clatter and crash from the kitchen. He rushed in only to find that Jackdaw had managed to stand on his hind legs and rest his forepaws against the kitchen counter, and had knocked a few dirty plates onto the ground. Both pups had already licked up the scraps, and were looking up at him eagerly for more. “Alright, alright, I’ll go get you two some food.” He said, and was met with a chorus of yips and howls from the two pups at his feet. Archer ran out to the barn and sorted through the kibble he had, eventually producing some leftover puppy food from when one of his other tokotas had been a puppy. After a moment of thought, Archer grabbed two filets of dried fish from a rack in the storage room to supplement the kibble- a little fresh fish couldn’t hurt the growing pups. As Archer walked back up to his house, he heard another clatter from inside, and opened the front door to find Mocha and Jackdaw in the living room by an overturned side table. Archer sighed, running a hand through the fur on the top of his head before bending and retrieving the objects that had been knocked off. Both pups quickly smelled that Archer had food on him, and approached him with wagging tails, wide eyes, and whines. With a sigh, Archer surrendered to the puppy dog eyes and fed both pups bits of kibble and fish. He unclipped the leashes from Jackdaw’s and Mocha’s harnesses, but left the strip of fabric in place for now. The makeshift harness would help prepare the pups for the saddles they’d eventually wear when Archer would ride them once they got older, and a little training as a pup went a long way. He finished tossing the bits of kibble and fish to Jackdaw and Mocha, despite their whines of protest and nosing of his hands, he didn’t get them more food. Their bellies had already noticeably rounded out from the food, and Archer moved over to his favourite chair, waiting for the inevitable. Just over five minutes had elapsed before both Jackdaw and Mocha had fallen asleep, curled up on one another on the living room rug. Archer closed his eyes, sighing heavily as he listened to the sounds of the two new pups breathing quietly. He could feel the first hints of tiredness dragging him down into sleep, and let his head sink onto his chest. Perhaps raising two tokota pups at once wouldn’t be so hard after all.
