Archer rolled over in bed, not pleased with the fact that his alarm was going off- though something seemed slightly different to him, and he struggled to remember what it was. Was something wrong with Mocha, Lima, or Foxtrot? No. He sat up slowly, rubbing his face and turned off the alarm, shrugging on a set of clean clothes and walking into the kitchen, but nearly tripped on an assortment of child’s toys. Right- he was forgetting about Jax, his friend, Aidyn’s toddler that he was taking care of while she was out of town for a few days. The little tyke was still asleep in his crib, unbothered by the noise of Archer’s alarm, and he made an effort to stay quiet while he got some breakfast started- his house wasn’t too big and the kitchen was open into the living room, where Jax was sleeping. Today’s meal consisted of scrambled eggs, some milk from one of the farmers up the road with some dairy cattle, and a few strips of thin, salted meat that were cut up and cooked with the eggs. Aidyn had left him with some sweeter alternatives as well, from fruits to applesauce and even peanut butter for sandwiches, and had included a large basket of easter candy that was sitting by the front door for Archer to reward Jax with if he was being good. Jax wasn’t awake yet, so Archer stepped into the front yard to see Mocha, Lima, and Foxtrot standing expectantly, waiting for their breakfast to be served as well. He greeted each tokota with a bowl of food and some individualized attention, like a head scratch and a cheek rub before heading back inside to check on Jax again. Smelling food, Foxtrot decided to show himself in through the open front door, and Archer’s attempt to get the large red and white tokota woke Jax. He started to stir in the crib as Archer finally got Foxtrot back out the front door, sitting up slowly and yawning, tugging at his footie pjammies with one hand as he looked around, seeming slightly confused.
“Good morning Jax.” Archer said, and Jax looked towards him with wide eyes. “Breakfast is almost ready- there’s fresh eggs, milk, meat, and if you’re good I have some applesauce for you as a snack later today.” He said with a gentle smile, and Jax slowly nodded, reaching up for Archer to lift him from the crib. Archer reached in and lifted Jax, putting him gently on the floor, and he heard the pitter pat of little feet making their way down to the bathroom. Archer set the kitchen table, which was in full view of Mocha, Lima, and Foxtrot, who were lying around the front yard. Archer suspected that they were expecting to go out on a long trip to one of the events like they had been the previous days of the week, but Archer’s friends did come first, and Aidyn’s request was an important one. Jax returned from the bathroom, still in his footie pajammys, and climbed up into the chair to sit with Archer at the table.
“Did you remember to wash your hands?” He prompted, remembering a few lines hastily memorized from a sheet of paper that Aidyn had left with him, and Jax nodded proudly.
“I used the soap but it got slippery so I chased it around the sink, but my hands are clean!” He said, showing the freshly scrubbed digits proudly to Archer, who smiled and nodded.
“I can see, good job remembering the soap Jax.” He said, before picking up his utensils and beginning to eat his breakfast. Jax started laughing loudly a minute or two later, the kind of child’s laugh where they find something absolutely hilarious with nothing held back. Archer looked up to try and find the source of his amusement, only to see Foxtrot’s face pressed up against the window, looking hungrily at Archer’s and Jax’s breakfasts. Mocha and Lima had padded over too, looking with interest at the food but refrained from pressing their entire faces against the pane of glass.
“Are they hungry?” Jax asked, and Archer shook his head.
“They shouldn’t be, since I gave them some breakfast before you woke up, but tokotas really like to eat a lot of food. Would you like to try feeding them after breakfast?” Archer gently suggested, giving Jax the option to say no if he wasn’t comfortable with it. He looked down at his plate, thinking carefully for a few moments before brightening up and agreeing to it, provided that he could finish the food that Archer had carefully portioned for him on his plate. While they ate, Archer told Jax about Foxtrot- the big red and white one, Lima- the gold and grey one, and Mocha- the brown one, and Jax seemed relatively interested in each tokota as Archer told him more about their personalities. Jax was extremely pleased with himself once he cleaned his plate, picking it up and showing it to Archer, and nearly dropping it in the process. Archer encouraged him to go play with some of his toys while he washed dishes, as well as change out of his pjammys into his regular clothes. He was met with some resistance, until he reminded Jax that people can only wear regular clothes outside, not pjammys. Jax was still a bit stubborn, until Archer reminded him that his mom, Aidyn, didn’t wear pjammys outside, and didn’t he want to try and be like her? The idea prompted a quick change of clothes on Jax’s part, and soon the young child was playing on the floor with some of the toys that his mother had brought along.
Once Archer had finished up with the dishes for breakfast, Jax was excited to meet Mocha, Lima, and Foxtrot. Archer gave him a handful of the food he fed to them this morning, and put a few more handfuls in his pockets before heading out the front door. Mocha, Foxtrot, and Lima immediately padded up, and Jax hid behind Archer, grabbing onto his tail. He gritted his teeth, instructing the tokotas to lie down, before carefully separating the toddler from his tail.
“Look, it’s okay, see, they’re not so big now, are they?” He said, and Jax looked over Mocha, Lima, and Foxtrot, who were now much shorter and comparable to his height. Gaining confidence, he walked over to Lima, who stayed still as he gently patted her nose, before she dipped her head and nosed at his hand with the food in it. Jax giggled, and Archer showed him how to put a few pieces in his palm and flatten his fingers, but Lima was very careful, using her tongue to lick up the offered food. Mocha whined and wiggled closer, while Foxtrot simply got up and planted himself next to Lima, nosing at Jax’s hands with his nose. The toddler giggled again, and Archer knelt beside him and fed Mocha a few pieces of food too, but kept a careful eye on Jax and his interactions with Lima and Foxtrot. Jax was gaining confidence in his interactions with Lima and Foxtrot, and Archer gently directed him to pay a bit more attention to Lima- she was more patient and motherly than Foxtrot was, and as a result would tolerate his gentle poking, prodding, and exploration of her fur and body better than the younger, more impatient Foxtrot would. Jax wandered around Lima, gently poking at the different gold and grey parts of her fur, talking to her and asking if she had rolled in dust to get her fur two different colors, and Archer chuckled, amused with Jax's gentle explorations of Mocha, Lima, and Foxtrot. Foxtrot eventually grew bored and got up, stretching his legs and padding off in the vague direction of the house, though Archer remained focused on Jax's gentle interactions with Lima and Mocha. At least, until he heard a crash of something falling behind him, and turned to see Foxtrot with his head through the front door of his house. He backed up hastily, holding Jax's basket of easter candy in his jaws.
"Oh no, come back here!" Archer said, standing up and going after Foxtrot, who took it to be a game of keep away. Jax, delighted by the scene, despite the fact his easter candy was in peril, laughed and clapped his hands, leaning up against Lima to watch the scene as Archer desperately tried to get Jax's easter candy back from the large red and white tokota.
